Something we never thought would happen: Sean Combs AKA Puff Daddy AKA P. Diddy AKA Diddy winning an Oscar. But that’s precisely the path he chose when he tackled executive production of the fantastic documentary, Undefeated, playing today at West End Cinema. This flick initially looks like it might be just another rendition of Remember the Titans, or Field of Dreams, but you’ll quickly see it’s much, much more.
This documentary follows Bill Courtney, a former high school football coach turned lumber salesman, as he takes on a true Cinderella story in North Memphis, Texas. The Manassas Tigers are a high school football team in an impoverished community. The team is faced with pathetic equipment and dilapidated playing space, but with Courtney’s leadership and the players’ perseverance, these young gentlemen band together in 2009 to become the most talented team Manassas has ever fielded. And, of course, this film’s success has much more to do with the fantastic football team and filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin than with Diddy, but we’re willing to concede that we didn’t think he had it in him.
